IMPORTANT PHRF INFORMATION:

As we approach the end of the year, most active racers are already planning their 2003 program. If you want crew to buy-in to the new year's program, you must plan ahead and identify key races so that critical crew members make sure that they are available.

For many, the SDYC New Year's Day race starts off the season. The fog has often cleared from the North Bay course by Noon, even if it hasn't cleared from racer's heads! From New Year's Day, we go straight into the first Championship Series Regatta of the season, the FIORE hosted by SWYC on Saturday 1/4/03. But more of the race schedule later.

While defining your 2003 schedule, don't forget the PHRF SD Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner on Sat. 1/11/03 at Fiddler's Green Restaurant in Shelter Island.

The formal activities start at 7-00 PM. To be sure of a table for your crew, book early, directly with the Restaurant. Also, save 10% on the great deal [$22 for three course meal with choice of Prime Rib or Fish] by prepaying at the Restaurant before Wed. 1/8/03. i.e. Prepay for a great $20 meal-deal. Sorry, no CRA discount that night !
There are over twenty local boats receiving trophies. Please make sure you are there, or have a representative to pick-up your trophy. We will also be awarding the very first San Diego PHRF Perpetual Trophies for the Six Class Champions.

For reservations, email [preferred] or call Steve Rock at fiddlersgreen@nethere.com, phone: 619-222-2216, Fax 619-222-5175. Send checks to Steve Rock at Fiddlers Green 2760 Shelter Island Dr. San Diego Calif. 92106. Seating is limited, and large tables are at a premium. Get your reservation in ASAP.

Two items of formal business must be conducted at the annual meeting. The first is the slate of board officer's for 2003. This will be mailed shortly with the ballots and snail-mail Notice of Meeting.

The second is the controversial Championship Series [High Point] schedule.

The board has agreed that members should be offered a choice between two options. They are both presented below. Also included is the proposed schedule for the Class 6 [Non-Spinnaker] fleet. Please review the options carefully, and be ready to vote at the meeting or when you receive your mail-in ballot. To avoid any confusion, the actual number of PHRF Races in San Diego is not being reduced. What is being proposed is to make it easier to qualify for, and compete in the Championship Series, with the goal of increasing participation and competition. We would also like to elevate the major two-day regattas to Premier Events ........ Read on !

2003 Championship [High Point] Series. [Spinnaker Classes]

In an effort to improve participation in the Championship Series, two schedules are proposed for voting at the annual meeting in January.

Proposal A.

This proposal represents “Status Quo”, retaining the existing Championship Series events, but reducing the required participation to qualify to 51% [rounded-up].

The three mini-series events are retained, in addition to the Overall class champion.

The races identified in Proposal A are as follows:

Proposal B.

This proposal represents a bold change to lessen the overall requirement and commitment needed to qualify and compete in the Championship Series, with the overall goal of increasing participation.

By removing both the Midwinter’s and PHRF SD Championship regattas, all Championship Series events [with the exception of the two weekends] only represent a one-day commitment. Also, the goal is to move towards only one Championship Series event in a four-week period. This should provide less scheduling conflicts with CRA and SB sponsored events. This is not entirely possible this first year, but will be worked-on for the future.

This does not mean that Midwinter’s and the PHRF Championship Regatta will not be fully supported PHRF events. More, that these events can be actively promoted as Premier Top Quality two-day regattas. This will then provide for three major two-day regattas in San Diego, fairly equally spaced throughout the year. [Midwinter’s, Yachting Cup, and SD PHRF Championship Regatta].
