PHRF San Diego Fleet Notice
Re: PHRF Southern California Asymmetrical Rules
PHRF Southern California Asymmetrical Spinnaker Rules, Take 2.
- You can fly your new asymmetrical spinnaker (aso) in the next Cabrillo race February 7th if you submit the required numbers by Monday, February 2nd and if the required dimensions and calculations are within spec. Our Chief Handicapper, Warren Gross, will check these numbers and verify the calculations.
- You do need to notify PHRF San Diego in writing but can do that just with
an email to webgurus@phrfsandiego.org
with the required numbers (see item 5).
- You do not need to have your new rating certificate physically in hand. However, the okay needs to come from our Chief Handicapper or Roster Secretary.
- If you are having problems or concerns, email Mike Kirk at webgurus@phrfsandiego.org) and I will try to help.
- You do need to provide the asymmetrical spinnaker numbers for SLU, SLE, Jc, Ic, SF, ASMG, ASMG/SF & AREA where
SLU shall not exceed 1.03 x [squareroot (Ic x Ic + Jc x Jc)]
SF shall not exceed 1.8 x Jc
ASMG shall not exceed 1.8 x Jc
ASMG/SF ratio shall be equal to or greater than 0.75
Any of the major sailmakers can help you with this.
- As some of you know, some boats were previously rated to carry a larger aso by PHRF Southern California under certain limitations. In most cases, this resulted in 2 rating certificates. One just for symmetricals and one just for asymmetricals. You could not fly both during any given regatta. These boats were grandfathered under the new rules but must abide by the original restrictions. With the new aso rule, you can fly either symmetricals or asymmetricals during the same regatta only if the aso meets the new smaller measurement requirements. If you have the separate
rating certificate with the larger aso, you can still use it but cannot use a symmetrical during the same regatta.
- For those of you who discovered you could just call up PHRF SoCal and get a SoCal certificate with the aso added over the phone, that was in error. PHRF San Diego just follows the SoCal Class Rules. You cannot just call up SoCal and get an aso added to your certificate over the phone. Same procedure as here. Must be in writing. There is documented confusion over the required numbers which is why we need the numbers in writing and need to confirm the calculations.
- Please be advised that you cannot race using a PHRF SoCal certificate and have it count towards the PHRF San Diego Championship Series. You must both be a member of PHRF San Diego and use that certificate for the PHRF San Diego Championship Series.
We want all the boats to get out and race but this does need to be fair to all boats. This is a major change.

Previous 16 January 2004 email (slightly edited):
Lots of discussion going on about the new PHRF Southern California asymmetrical spinnaker rules.
Here is a summary. Commencing October 25, 2003, Asymmetrical Spinnakers that conform to the specifications posted by PHRF Southern California have been approved for regular spinnaker boats without an automatic penalty.
However, you must notify PHRF San Diego in writing that you are planning to use asymmetricals and provide the 'Asymmetrical Spinnaker' information required for your rating certificate. Your sailmaker can help you with this.
Before using your new asymmetrical, you need a new PHRF San Diego rating certificate which will have the 'Asymmetrical Spinnaker' information filled out.
Note that per PHRF SoCal Class Rule 5.5.2, the sailmaker or boat owner must sign each asymmetrical spinnaker indicating date of measurement, the length of the luff and leech, and girths, and his/her approval to all other requirements.
If you have notified PHRF SD and have received your new rating certificate with the 'Asymmetrical Spinnaker' part filled out, then you are okay to use them. There are some boats previously approved under the old rules so those certificates are still valid.
For details on the new
asymmetrical spinnaker rules, please see the PHRF Southern Califorina web site
at
http://www.phrfsocal.org/
PHRF San Diego will occasionally post notices like this one on the PHRF San Diego web site with hopes of explaining the often confusing
procedures and rules from the Constitution and Bylaws, Competition Protocols and Appendix 1 which are posted on the PHRF San Diego web site and the Class Rules which are posted on the PHRF Southern California web site. This is only an explanation. As a courtesy, PHRF San Diego will also send this out as a fleet email. If you have not been receiving these emails or need to correct your email address, please email your corrections to Mike Kirk using
webgurus@phrfsandiego.org.
